Lot 628
Byzantine Empire. John V (?), 1341-1391., Æ 15 (follaro?), uncertain mint. Four B's in the angles of a cross, also with triangle of pellets in three of the angles. Rev, Half-length crowned figure of emperor facing, holding cruciform scepter, omega in r. field. Bendall (A Private Collection of Palaeologan Coins) 384; Schlumberger (Numismatique de l'orient Latin) 24

This enigmatic type is regarded by Bendall as Palaeologan though he does not attempt to assign it to a particular ruler, classifying it simply as "Sub-Byzantine". The present attribution is made with some hesitation by the cataloguer though the presence of the omega in right field would seem to suggest that the emperor's name was Johannes, consequently making John V a strong candidate. Very Fine and very rare.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
